STATEMENT
As
Treasurer and a member of the first elected Board of Directors
of the Society in 2001 – 2002, I was able to contribute
to its early successes by establishing a budget and hiring
staff that enabled the Society to make strides in:
-
Advocating on behalf of engineers and our profession, as
shown by the Society’s direct influence on Ontario
legislation such as the Sustainable Water and Sewage Systems
Act;
-
Providing members with a sense of belonging and mutual support,
for example, with a number of very successful regional launch
events and the Annual General Assembly;
-
Supplying valued and innovative services, such as the Career
Centre and EngineersFirst; and
-
Offering quality professional training, as offered through
the Career Centre.
Three
years later, the Society is now severed from PEO funding and
members and non-members alike continue to question the value
of membership. Without an increase in support from the engineering
community the Society, and its valuable influence on our profession,
is in jeopardy. My goal, as a Board Member, will be to ensure
that the excellent work being done by the Society continues,
that it becomes more widely known and appreciated by all of
Ontario’s Professional Engineers, and that membership
in the Society grows. The financial sustainability of the
Society depends on an increased membership and a responsible
governing Board that is able to direct the Society to meet
its members’ objectives.
