OSPE supports clean, green energy with Bullfrog Power®

Green energy
Bullfrog Power®, 2015

At the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, we recognize the importance of managing our environmental impact. We are excited to announce we’re taking a big step to reduce the carbon emissions footprint of our business by choosing 100% green energy for our company and by supporting the development of new green energy projects across Canada with Bullfrog Power.

“The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers is proud to be supporting clean, renewable energy with Bullfrog Power,” said Sandro Perruzza, Chief Executive Officer, OSPE. “By bullfrogpowering our green electricity initiative, OSPE is greening its operations and doing our part to help Canada transition to a renewably powered future.”

Across Canada, Bullfrog’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities, with at least 50% sourced directly from this region.

Bullfrog ensures the energy going onto the grid on our behalf is from clean, renewable sources, displacing energy from polluting sources.

As Bullfrog Power uses its customers’ support to provide funding to new green energy projects, our green energy purchase is also helping provide critical financial support to new renewable energy projects in our region and across Canada. We are so proud to be choosing green energy and, in doing so, leading the way to a renewably powered future.

I’ve read the material provided and scanned through the Bullfrogpower site and still don’t understand the concept here. Yes, there is lots of feel-good info about renewable energy and how we are going to do our share to protect the planet. As I understand it, we pay a premium for energy and some how bullfrog provides green energy. As all energy comes from the same grid and is not coloured or otherwise identified, the concept is to generate green energy equal to what we buy. But how do we know that? When we turn on the light, does a windmill start turning or a solar panel connect? Is it like a timeshare? Are we just contributing to the green energy production inventory? How do we know that the same green energy is not being “sold” to a number of paying customers? (apparently there’s an audit process but nothing in the info provided convinces me that it is fool proof – he who pays for the audit controls the audit). In reality all green energy production could be stopped and we would still get the same power of the grid. We would not be any wiser. Two years later an audit may possibly identify a problem – whops, we screwed up, we’ll do better next time!
My limited research identifies Bullfrogpower as a private corporation specializing in marketing. They don’t produce anything just move numbers around on a spreadsheet and take their cut. You haven’t convinced me that paying a premium to a private corporation for so-called green energy is the best use of my fees. How does this contribute to the OPSE mandate?

Just when i thought it couldnt get any worse for OSPE. This free advertising is embarrassing, and as Peter said, does 0 to contribute to the OSPE mandate…but what do you expect when you have a workplace full of non engineers who are trying to convince you that they’re capable of speaking up for engineers?

Please, for the love of god….stop writing this drivel and go and do some real advocacy.

Rick – thanks for reading the blog. You’re right – this post is promotional – to announce our partnership with Bullfrog Power. Regarding advocacy, you’re also right – we need more engineers to get involved with OSPE, provide expertise and tell us what issues they care most about.

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for reading our blog post and taking the time to provide your thoughts. OSPE chose to partner with Bullfrog in order to support community-based green energy projects that will take action on climate change. The money we give to Bullfrog supports the generation of pollution-free power – their generators put green electricity onto the grid to match the amount of electricity we use. Bullfrog’s power comes from wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian green energy facilities. 50% of their clean power is sourced directly from projects in our region.
As the voice of the engineering profession in Ontario, OSPE wants to promote and support research and innovation in sustainability and green technology, and this is just one way we’re attempting to do that.

    Warmest Regards,

    Sandro Perruzza
    CEO, OSPE
