This talk aims to address the pivotal role of equity in the engineering field as well as present actionable steps to take to increase the visibility of diverse professionals working in highly technical spaces.

Emphasis is placed on empowering engineers with the knowledge and tools necessary to make meaningful contributions to increasing equity in the engineering field. The goal is to create a more diverse, inclusive, and innovative industry. This presentation will be grounded in the core principles of EDI, which include:

  • Equity: Advocating for fair treatment, opportunities, and advancement for all individuals in the engineering field, while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups.
  • Diversity: Encouraging the representation of different perspectives, backgrounds, races, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities in engineering, recognizing that a diverse workforce drives innovative solutions and reflects the world we live in.
  • Inclusion: Fostering a culture where all individuals feel respected, are treated fairly, have equal access to opportunities and resources, and can contribute fully to the organization’s success.

The learning objectives for the webinar will be an understanding of the following:

  • Recognize and Understand Barriers: Identify the systemic barriers to equity in engineering and their impact on underrepresented groups.
  • Implement Actionable Strategies for Diversity and Inclusion: Apply specific recruitment, hiring, and retention strategies to increase diversity and foster inclusion within their organizations or teams.
  • Measure and Track Progress: Understand the importance of measuring progress in EDI efforts and use appropriate tools to track improvements over time.

You may be eligible for 1 CPD hour.

Speaker Bio

Jennifer Ladipo, Industrial Engineer

Jennifer Ladipo graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in Industrial Engineering where her advocacy for diversity in engineering began. She combined her love for mathematics and writing to create TheSTEMGirl, an initiative aimed at encouraging young girls in engineering through storytelling.

With multiple publications in both academic and non-academic spaces, she has over seven years of experience in effectively communicating the need for policies focused on developing equitable spaces. Jennifer’s work is guided by the principle that true innovation and excellence in engineering can only be achieved through a workforce that reflects the diversity of society and by creating spaces where all voices are heard and valued.

In addition to championing diversity in professional spaces, Jennifer is the National Programs Manager at Actua. She is responsible for directing the engagement of underserved youth audiences and guiding the delivery of STEM(Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)  programs through Actua’s network.  Actua’s network represents over 40 universities and colleges across Canada, delivering hands-on STEM programming to youth in every province and territory.

Jennifer has spoken at conferences hosted by various organizations invested in the enhancement of effective policies that encourage representation across all STEM sectors, such as: ONWIE, Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, First Lego Robotics and various others.  Jennifer’s work embodies the essence of using informed approaches to navigate the complexities of equity in engineering.
