OSPE Hosts Members-Only Discussion on Regulatory Reform and the Professional Engineers Act

On November 23, OSPE brought together members of OSPE’s Professional Engineers Act Working Group, to discuss the latest submission to the Ministry of the Attorney General. The submission outlines nine recommended changes to the Professional Engineers Act, that will support the change effort at Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), protect the public interest, and reduce red tape for license applicants and engineering businesses.

Working group members, Annette Bergeron, P.Eng., Bernard Ennis, P.Eng., Mark Frayne, P.Eng., and Bruce Matthews, P.Eng., participated on the panel to discuss the rationale and importance behind each recommendation. While former President of PEO, David Brown, P.Eng., was unable to attend, he had presented his perspective on a recent episode of OSPE’s podcast Engineering the Future.

Following the panel discussion, members were invited to provide comments, ask questions, and make suggestions for what they would like to see OSPE focus on in 2022. OSPE will continue to consult with members, subject matter experts, and partners on regulatory reform in the coming year. We know that a strong and focused regulator is necessary for the engineering profession to flourish. The risks of inaction are high and so together we must continue to advocate for transformative action.

Our members have expressed some additional key considerations that must be addressed in the long-term for regulatory success:

  • Improved oversight mechanisms
  • Mandatory liability insurance
  • Financial stewardship
  • Accountability
  • Role of PEO Chapters
  • Governance structure

Look out for future member-only events, leave your comments on the EngageForum, or contact us directly at advocacy@ospe.on.ca to tell us what issues you would like to see addressed.
