When you meet Dr. Emily Moore, P.Eng., there’s one thing stands out right away: she knows how to bring out the best in people. Whether she’s leading a research team, guiding a global company, or teaching future engineers, Emily has a way of inspiring those around her to think bigger and do better.
This year, she’s being recognized with the Engineering Medal for Management, and it’s a celebration of everything she’s accomplished and how she’s embodied excellent leadership along the way.
Emily’s career started at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada (XRCC), where she made history as the first woman ever named Principal Engineer. Her work in materials science was groundbreaking. She developed toner technologies that earned her 21 U.S. patents and helped Xerox shift toward more eco-friendly products. Her contributions were so impactful that she received the Joseph C. Wilson Award, the company’s highest innovation honour.
From there, Emily took on leadership roles at Hatch Ltd.. As Managing Director of Water, she brought together different parts of the company to build a global water strategy. Later, as Managing Director of Innovation, she reshaped how new ideas were developed and launched, creating faster, smarter ways to bring solutions to market. Her efforts earned her the Kalev Pugi Award and a spot among the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.
These days, Emily is focused on shaping the next generation of engineers as the Director of the Troost Institute for Leadership Education in Engineering at the University of Toronto. She brings her industry experience into the classroom, teaching students how to lead with ethics, systems thinking, and sustainability in mind. Her passion for teaching has already been recognized with the SKULE Teaching Award.
A Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a respected board leader for eight years, Emily has advanced engineering in every context she’s touched—from chemical labs and corporate boardrooms to lecture halls and policy tables. Her management style blends technical depth with inclusive, mission-driven leadership, making her a powerful force for innovation and a model for engineering professionals across Canada.
