On Monday, September 1, 2025 the government of Ontario announced it will be removing barriers to interprovincial work for engineers. This marks a policy win for OSPE’s advocacy efforts to modernize the Engineering Act.
Ontario has signed agreements with provinces and territories to create interprovincial mobility for in-demand professions, including engineers. These agreements allow Ontario engineers to move and work in other provinces and territories. It also allows engineers from other parts of the country to work in Ontario.
OSPE celebrates this announcement. As the voice of the engineering profession, OSPE has met with the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini and appeared at the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs to advocate for this modernization, making this move by the provincial government a major policy win.
Enhancing labour mobility for engineers benefits Canada. These changes boost productivity and provide the engineering workforce necessary to deliver nation-building projects across critical sectors.
Why This Matters to Engineers
The Ontario government introducing interprovincial labour mobility for engineers is recognition of the vital role engineers play in Canada’s economy. Some of the benefits of this decision for engineers include:
Minimizing delays in certification: Starting January 1, 2026, engineers can begin working in Ontario within 10 days of the confirmation of their credentials and requirements by PEO, speeding up the process of joining the workforce as a professional engineer.
New opportunities: Engineers across Canada can enter new markets without costly delays in certification. As nation-building projects across the country are announced, engineers will be able to participate in strengthening provincial and national economies.
Building a resilient Ontario: By removing red tape in collaboration with regulators, these agreements foster a qualified engineering workforce in Ontario. Ontario engineers can deliver safe, high-quality engineering solutions to the public.
Moving forward
Removing barriers to labour mobility for engineers delivers positive results for the profession and the public. OSPE celebrates this policy win and will continue to advocate for policy that incorporates engineering solutions and leadership in building a resilient Canadian economy.
