OSPE Congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and Commends All Federal Party Leaders

The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) extends our sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election victory. We look forward to working with Prime Minister Carney and his government to advance key issues that will strengthen Canada’s engineering profession and contribute to building a more resilient, sustainable, and prosperous future for all Canadians.

We also wish to recognize and congratulate the leaders of the other federal parties: Pierre Poilievre (Conservative Party), Jagmeet Singh (New Democratic Party), and Jonathan Pedneault and Elizabeth May (Green Party) for their leadership and commitment throughout this important democratic process. Canada is fortunate to have a vibrant, competitive democracy, and OSPE deeply values the opportunity to engage with all parties on the issues that matter most to engineers and to the communities we serve.

Throughout the federal election campaign, OSPE shared a detailed platform outlining our profession’s priorities for the next government. In our congratulatory letter to Prime Minister Carney, we reiterated these priorities, which include:

OSPE’s Federal Election Priorities:

1. Strengthening Canada’s Engineering Labour Market

We advocate for expanded support for work-integrated learning, better immigration pathways for internationally trained engineers, upskilling opportunities for displaced workers, and initiatives that encourage Indigenous youth to pursue careers in engineering and STEM.

2. Supporting Smart Infrastructure and Sustainable Cities

We urge the federal government to mandate Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) in procurement, invest in climate-resilient infrastructure, and integrate smart city technologies for efficient, equitable urban development.

3. Promoting Clean Technology and a Low-Carbon Economy

We call for robust investment in made-in-Canada engineering solutions across clean energy, hydrogen, carbon capture, electrification, and grid modernization.

4. Advancing Engineering’s Role in Climate and Energy Policy

We advocate for engineers’ involvement in climate adaptation, emergency preparedness, and critical infrastructure resilience planning, with a focus on securing Canada’s technical sovereignty.

5. Building National Capacity in Innovation, Research, and Development

We encourage enhanced support for engineering-focused research and development, commercialization of innovations, and stronger industry–academia collaboration.

6. Championing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

We seek dedicated funding and policies to promote greater diversity in engineering, applying Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) across federal STEM initiatives.

7. Protecting Engineers Through Clear Professional Liability Standards

We recommend collaboration with provincial regulators to ensure consistent professional liability frameworks that prioritize public safety and environmental stewardship.

8. Addressing Tariffs and Strengthening Engineering Trade Resilience

We urge the new government to oppose unjustified tariffs, build resilient supply chains, and protect Canada’s access to critical technologies and materials.

At OSPE, we believe that engineers are critical to solving Canada’s most pressing challenges, from building sustainable infrastructure to leading clean technology innovation. We are excited to collaborate with the new government and all parliamentarians to ensure that the voice of engineers continues to shape Canada’s future.

Congratulations once again to all leaders, candidates, and Canadians who participated in this historic election!
