In the News: OSPE Talks Bike Lanes and Big Infrastructure

September was a strong month for the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE)’s visibility and impact. Two high-profile publications shared OSPE’s evidence-based insights; advancing safer streets and better infrastructure decisions across Ontario.

OSPE’s Media Mentions

1) CBC’s What on Earth: “How the city of lights became the city of bikes.”
The episode aired in mid-September and examined why “bikelash” happens and how cities successfully implement bike adoption. The podcast episode explored what bike lanes do for emissions, safety, and city vitality, referencing OSPE’s statement supporting multi-modal, evidence-based street design in response to Bill 212.

For context on OSPE’s stance, see our response on Bill 212 and the recent court decision upholding protected lanes.

2) Global News: Article on Highway 401 tunnel feasibility
Global News quoted OSPE CEO Sandro Perruzza in its September 25, 2025 story, No contract awarded to study Hwy. 401 tunnel plan, one year after it was announced,” urging a careful, data-driven approach to the proposed Highway 401 tunnel and more engineering consultations up front to save money and reduce risk downstream.

Why This Matters for OSPE and the Profession

  • Public trust in engineering. When journalists seek out engineers to discuss contested issues, like bike lane safety and megaproject feasibility, it shows the public that decisions are being weighed against evidence, safety, and whole-system performance.
  • Policy impact. Coverage puts OSPE’s recommendations in front of decision-makers and voters. That helps translate technical guidance (design standards, risk analysis, cost-benefit) into actionable policy.
  • Pride for the profession. Seeing engineers shape public conversation encourages students, EITs, and mid-career professionals to take pride in the profession and engage with OSPE’s advocacy.
  • Consistency and credibility. From street design to megaprojects, our message is the same: measure first, design for safety, and spend wisely. Media mentions reinforce that OSPE is a steady, non-partisan voice.

When engineers are part of the stories being told, we not only help ensure public decisions are grounded in evidence, but also elevate the profession’s visibility and credibility in shaping a better future.
