POLICY WIN: OSPE’s IAQ Advisory Group Guides Ontario’s Bill to Protect Against Airborne Pandemics

MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam (NDP) discusses the newly tabled bill at Queen’s Park.

Ontario’s elected officials are taking action on OSPE’s public safety recommendations. This week, the New Democratic Party incorporated guidance from our Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Advisory Group in their newly tabled Advisory Committee to Protect Ontario’s People and Economy from Airborne Pandemics Act.

Introduced March 27, the Act calls for establishment of an official committee to recommend infrastructure improvements, regulations, and standards to enhance indoor air quality across Ontario.

Much of the bill’s content is informed by OSPE’s IAQ reports, published in December 2022. These reports were authored by a multi-disciplinary panel of experts in response to the need for evidence-based guidance around indoor air quality and COVID-19 transmission, and outline clear steps to protect the public from airborne diseases.

OSPE has worked diligently to share these reports with government officials and the public, and we are pleased to see the results of our work reflected in this new bill. We are optimistic that this bill will become a regulation in the near future. By implementing our indoor air quality recommendations, Ontario can proactively protect its citizens and economy from the potential harms of airborne pandemics.
