Candidate Statement
The modern engineer wears many hats, and increasingly, the most important is the ‘engineering communicator’. Like science communication, which uses persuasive and entertaining means to relate technical topics to a non-technical audience, I believe that engineering communication goes one step further to relate engineering skills and identity to leadership of society at large.
As a tech entrepreneur with a background in aerospace engineering, my goal is to help OSPE grow and modernize its communications strategy with a stronger focus on hi-tech, social change, diversity and inclusion, and everyday life.
OSPE must promote in unequivocal terms the profession as more than a regulatory definition, but as a relatable community of skilled practitioners united by a common mission to build better societies and the tools they use. OSPE must also fully leverage social media, mass media, relationships with universities and colleges, public events, hi-tech platforms (accelerators and regional innovation centres), and especially K-12 outreach to deliver strategic awareness programs. I will help OSPE strategize and executive these initiatives as I have done previously with conferences, tradeshows, and campaigns (for more info, please see www.jchw.me).
Perceptions of engineering continue to be outdated and limited in scope. Whether the profession grows or shrinks in its significance is up to us. We need the general public, our government, our colleagues, and especially ourselves to see engineering as a force of change.
