Leyla Soleymani is an Associate Professor of Engineering Physics and Canada Research Chair at McMaster University. Soleymani’s research involves developing low-cost, miniaturized devices that can be used at point-of-care and in the field to quickly and accurately diagnose disease. This research will help to provide fast and affordable diagnostic testing and healthcare services for under-served populations in Canada, and resource-poor communities in the developing world.
Why did you choose to pursue engineering?

I chose to pursue engineering because of my interest in new technology. My father is an engineer and his interest in technology sparked my interest in this field.
What do you find most fulfilling about your current role?
—
For the past decade, I have been working on improving the performance of biological sensors for diagnostic testing. The journey towards this goal, working with graduate students, designing new experiments and obtaining exciting results has been most fulfilling.
In your opinion, what does engineering stand for?
—
To me, engineering means developing new technologies for improving human life.
Beyond technical knowledge, what other skills are useful in your current role?
—
In my current role, communication skills, creativity, problem solving and being goal-oriented are skills that are useful.
What’s next for you in your career? What is your hope for the future of the engineering profession in Ontario?
—
I aspire to increase the impact of my work by doing groundbreaking research. I hope that the engineering community continues to promote diversity, interdisciplinary work and entrepreneurship.

I would like to train engineers that are innovative and entrepreneurial.
