This is a reminder that as of May 15, 2023, Professional Engineers Ontario’s EIT program is no longer accepting new applicants – the program is currently suspended. This decision reflects changes in the licensing process mandated to PEO due to the Fair Access to Regulated Professions and Compulsory Trades Act. Under the revised framework, engineering work experience must be acquired before applying for licensure making the EIT structure unsustainable.
Impact on Professional Requirements
Engineering employers, corporations, and other stakeholders must know and respond to this change. Many job postings still list the EIT designation as a requirement to apply for positions, and others even list positions titled “EIT” creating significant confusion in the marketplace.
OSPE is encouraging employers to consider the broader skills and competencies of applicants beyond the EIT designation. We are calling on our membership to educate employers, HR associates, and others in your network to encourage them to adapt to these changes in their hiring practices.
Support for Current EITs
For our current members, who enrolled in the EIT program before it was suspended, we want to assure you that OSPE is committed to supporting you throughout your licensing journey. If you are enrolled in the EIT program, you can continue your progression toward becoming a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) under the existing PEO guidelines. For recent graduates, OSPE has a number of supports available. You can view them all here.
Moving Forward Together
At OSPE, we value the contributions of our members in shaping the future of engineering in Ontario. We encourage you to stay informed and participate in discussions surrounding these changes. Your insights are essential as we navigate this transition and ensure a robust licensing framework that supports the needs of engineers and the public they serve, including exploring new pathways to licencing for candidates from various backgrounds and for those working in emerging technologies.
