OSPE Seeks to Better Understand Working-from-Home Post-Pandemic

How have you felt about working-from-home during the pandemic?

As part of our partnership with the Future Skills Centre and Prism Economics and Analysis, OSPE has launched a survey to collect information on its members’ experience as they worked from home during the pandemic. This is the only survey on this topic that is specifically focused on the experience of engineering and technology professionals.

Following the implementation of stay-at-home/shelter-in-place protocols, working-from-home and remote working became the new norm for many engineering and technology professionals. Going forward, many employers are planning to incorporate working-from-home into their normal operations. For some employers, working from home will be the normal practice. Others have indicated that they will implement a hybrid model that combines working-from-home and traditional office settings.

Engineering and technology work is often different from other types of work. In the first place, engineering and technology professionals often work in teams. They often need to be on site. Younger professionals, in particular, often benefit from their informal interactions with more experienced colleagues. There are many questions that need to be addressed. How will working-from-home affect the functioning of engineering teams? How will it affect career paths? Does more working-from-home make it easier to take a job in another city without moving? How will it affect recent graduates and younger professionals? How will it affect women in engineering and technology jobs? Does working-from-home make it easier or more difficult for internationally educated engineering and technology professionals to find work and advance their careers? How does working-from-home affect productivity? Innovation? Hours worked? Work-life balance? We need more understanding of working-from-home to address these and many more questions.

The survey is part of a broader study that OSPE is undertaking with funding by the Government of Canada’s Future Skills Centre.
